men som det synes kun lidt, er 5.4 m. lang.
Ved siden af de anførte ligheder mellem skibet og
baadene sees der ogsaa nogen forskjel. Saaledes er baa-
denes kjøl i hver ende fæstet umiddelbart til stavnene
(pl. V. fig. 11, 124) uden noget mellemstykke eller «lot»
(jfr. s. 55); baadene have ikke havt tverbaand (biter), men
kun løse tofter (pl. VII. fig. 4, 5), heller ikke mastefisk,
men vel et mastespor (pl. IV. fig. 7), der er lidt ander-
ledes end det, som findes anvendt under skibets opstan-
dere (pl. II. fig. 1 a,c). Foruden dette spor har der rime-
ligvis i midten af den overliggende tofte været et hul for
masten, som derved yderligere blev støttet i forbindelse med
stag og vant. Baadene have større «stavnskud», end
skibet, eller mere liggende stavne (pl. V fig. 11, 12a), og
foruden at disse ere forholdsvis smalere, løbe de op i en
spids. Tiljernes plads var i bunden mellem spanterne
(jfr. s. 25), og naar undtages de to trekantede «pligter»,
en i hver ende, ere de øvrige tiljer sammensatte, som nu,
af flere tversgaaende bordstykker, der underneden for-
bindes ved en paanaglet list. Heller ikke have baadene
huller for aarerne, men keiper (pl. V. fig. 5—7,9, 13, 15, 18),
som fæstes med nagler paa rælingens overkant og ere
forsynede med huller for hamlebaand. Noget eget for
baadene ere ogsaa de ovennævnte (s. 384) klamper eller
lapper (fila).

Derimod har jeg hverken i baadene eller
udløb af vandet ved landsætning, som nu er sedvanligt i
en stor del af vore baade, og hvis udfyldning foregaar
ved en rund pind eller prop, paa Østlandet kaldet «tap»,
paa Vestlandet og nordenfjelds «nygla». Forresten ud-
merke baadene sig ved samme dygtige og smukke arbeide
som skibet og navnlig ved lister og udskaarne forsiringer
(pl. V. fig. 5—7, 9, 13, 15, 16—18); ligeledes have tiljerne
lignende indridsede cirkler (jfr. pl. VI. fig. 12—14).
Hvad nys blev sagt om arbeidet paa skibet og
baadene, gjælder ogsaa næsten j sin helhed om de andre
ting, som fandtes, enten de ere smedede, støbte, eller
gjorte af tre. Dog have træsagerne en overvejende
interesse fremfor de øvrige slags derved, at der af de
sidste allerede tilforn var fremkommet en større meengde,
skjønt hverken nogen saa stor kjedel (s. 43) eller en saa
rigt udstyret skjærdingslænke (s. 45) og heller ikke beslag
eller spender til remme med saadan rigdom af forsiringer
(s. 49, pl. X. fig. 11. 12). Aftræsager fra den yngre jern-

Side by side with these adduced resemblances, some
differences appear. Thus the boat keels are, at each end,
fixed immediately to the stem (pl. V. fig. 11, 12 @)
without intervention of any middle piece or socalled
«lot» (conf. pag. 55); the boats have no beams, but
simply detatched thwarts (pl. VII. fig. 4. 5), neither have
they a mastpartner, but are however provided with a
mast step (pl. IV. fig. 7) differing slightly from that ap-
plied under the stanchions in the ship (pl. Il. fig. 1 @. ¢).

found in one of the thwarts a hole to receive, and, aided

What has just been stated touching the workman-
ship of the ship and her boats, is also neariy in its en-
tirety applicable to the other relics, whether forged, cast
or wrought in wood. Such as are formed of wood
possess, however, a predominant interest over those of
any other kind, since of the latter a considerable number
had been previously brought to light, although no cal-
dron so large (pag. 43) or any so well manufactured sus-
pending chain (p. 45), neither any strap-mountings or
buckles with such a wealth of embellishment (p. 48, 49, pl. X.
fig. 11. 12); whereas of relics in wood from the later iron
