ie Sclaverei gehört der Vergangenheit an; man
trifft sie freilich noch, z. B. in den südlichen
Staaten Nordamerika^; der Stab ist aber über sie
gebrochen und sie wird verschwinden. Im
Mittelalter gab es für gewisse Verbrecher die Strafe,
einen todten Hund zu tragen, bis er verwest war;
■— die Staaten, die die Sclaverei noch beibehalten,
gleiten diesen Verbrechern; sie athmen den giftigen
Hauch verrotteter Institutionen und gehen moralisch
unter. Die Zeit kommt, wo die Menschheit nicht
Jnehr ihre Mitglieder zu Sclaven zu erniedrigen
braucht, denn sie hat andere Sclaven gefunden,
Kinder ihres Geistes, und doch nicht Menschen, nicht
unsterbliche Wesen, die zu einem ändern Zweck in
die Welt gekommen sind, als um nur für das
Materielle sich abzuarbeiten. Diese neuentdeckten
Scla-Ven sind riesenstarke Wesen mit Gliedern von
Ei-8en und Lungen, die Feuer athmen. Ihre Nahrung
Wächst nicht auf Aeckern, wo im Sonnenschein sich
goldene Aehren wiegen, sie wird geholt aus einer
Vegetation, die seit tausend und aber tausend
Jahren geruht hat im Sclioosse der Erde und geerntet
Wird aus den Gruben der Nacht. Wenn auch
riesenstark und kräftig genug, um eine Eisenstange
zu zerbrechen, wie wir ein Stückchen Glas, so sind
sie doch gehorsam wie Lämmer und richten ohne
Murren aus, wenn auch mit viel Geräusch, was
ihnen aufgetragen. Sie sind vortreffliche,
achtungs-werthe Geschöpfe und ich tliat Unrecht, sie Sclaven
^u nennen; sie sind Diener, aber keine Sclaven.

geringen Versuch dazu, springen sie in die Luft, Tod
und Verderben um sich sprühend. Sie dulden
’uck — so oder so viel Pfund auf den
Quadrat-p ^ aber keine Unterdrückung. Die kleinste
Gewalt gegen ihre Natur bringt sie gleich in
Flani-2??n.. Sie sind willige u. gute, aber selbstständige
iener u. sind auch in diesem Falle ein Vorbild für
en Herrn, den Menschen. Achtung und Ruhm

JlTegerslafveriet tillhör en förfluten tid. Det
anträf-^ fas väl ännu, t. ex. i Nordamerikas sydliga
stater. Men det är uldömdt och det skall försvinna.
Det var i medeltiden ett straff för vissa slags
förbrytare att bära en död hund, tilldess han förruttnat.
De samhällen, som ännu bibehålla negerslafveriet,
likna sådane förbrytare. De inandas den ruttnade
institutionens giftiga ångor och gå moraliskt under.
Tiden nalkas, då menniskan icke behöfver göra sin
medmeriuiska till slaf, ty hon hnr funnit andra
slaf-var, som äro barn af hennes anda, men likväl icke
ménniskor, icke odödliga varelser, som kommit till
verlden för ett annat mål än blott det materiella
trälandet. Dessa nyupptäckta slafvar äro jettestarka
väsenden med lemmar af jern och med lungor, som
andas eld. Deras föda växer icke på de åkrar, som
gunga i solskenet gyllene skördar utan hemtas ur
en vegetation, som i tusen sinom tusen år stått
under jorden och skördas ur grufvornas natt. Fastän
starka som jettar, fastän i stånd att bräcka en
jern-stång, som vi ett stycke glas, äro de lydiga som
lam och uträtta utan knot, om än med mycket buller,
livad som åligger dem. De äro förträffliga,
aktningsvärda väsen. Jag gjorde orätt uti att kalla dem
slafvar. De äro tjenare, men icke slafvar. De låta
icke förtrycka sig. Vid minsta försök dertill springa
de i luften, spridande död och förfärelse öfver
förtryckaren. De tåla tryck — så eller så många
skålpunds tryck pr qvadrattum — men icke förtryck.
Det minsta våld mot sin natur bränna de genast.
De äro villiga och goda, men sjelfständiga tjenare.
De äro äfven i det fallet en föresyn för sin herre,
menniskan. Lefve derföre maschinen! Heder åt de
instituter, der han bildas och uppfostras!
Det äldsta institut af detta slag i Göteborg är
hr Alexander Keillers. Och likäl är dess födelseår
icke längre tillbaka än året 1847. Men hvilken
mängd hyggliga elever som Keiller under denna
tid bildat ! Tjugosex af dem hafva valt sjön till vitai
genus och i gestalten af ångbåtar gått att klyfva

^ffegro-slavery is an institution of by-gone days.
Traces of it may still be found in the Southern
States of North America. But it is doomed and it
shall cease. During the middle-ages, there was a
punishment entailed on a certain class of criminals,
which consisted in making them carry a dead dog
until the animal was in a state of putrifaction. The
communities which still retain negro-slavery
resemble those criminals. They inhale the pestiferous
vapours of the rotten institution and are progressing
towards their moral ruin. The time is approaching
when man will no longer have need of making his
fellow-man a slave, for he has found other
slaves, which are the children of his brain, but not
human flesh and blood, not beings with immortal
souls, who have come into the world for other
purposes than those of mere material drudgery. Those
recently discovered slaves are beings of gigantic
strength, with limbs of iron and lungs that breath
fire. Their food is not taken from „pleasant meads
where golden crops in sunshine wave“, but is the
produce of a vegetation which for thousands and
thousands of years has lain buried in the earth and
is gathered from the dark depths of the mines.
Although strong as giants, although capable of
breaking an iron bar with as much ease as we break a
glass, they are obedient and gentle as the lamb and
perform their tasks without a murmur although not
without a considerable amount of noise. They are
excellent, respectable beings. I was wrong in
calling them slaves. They are servants, not slaves.
They will not allow themselves to be oppressed;
at the slightest attempt of that kind they explode
and deal death and destruction upon the oppressor.
They admit of pressure — so or so many pounds
pressure to the square inch — but not oppression.
The least violence against their nature, they
immediately revenge. They are good, willing, but
independent servants, and in this respect they might
serve as a pattern for man, their master. There-
