THE SK§UTS-BOY. 151

#Iadame de Dressen, that she refused my invitation for this
cvening, and sits ai home, in the meantime, to watch the boy,
who is nothing fo ber."
"What !" exclaimed Mademoiselle l#yquist; "your grace has
done ber the honour fo invite ber ]"
"If is a fact. The lieutenant-colonel called upon me, and
begged the honour of presenting his ladies to me. To prepare
an agreeable surprise for them, as I thought, I invited them to
corne and take tea with me to-night; but who was if that
refused to corne ] they did !"

blind man might #ouch if with his cane. I know, for certain,
that they wished their daughter to marry him so much, that
they bave almost thrown themselves upon his back. The
lieutenant-colonel bas even moved over fo his bouse, that he
may have him #mder his eye; and to coml#lete the marrer still
more, they bave taken his sick boy into their bouse. There–
you can plainly see what their intentions are. I should think if
would not reqldre so much trouble fo obtain a husband for the
girl."
"If might, ai least, have been done more deccntly," observed
the countess, •
