CHAPTER XIX.
SEPARATION.
THE lieutenant-colonel, #vith his nose ai least three inches

he retired, and directed his course over the bridge, to see his

room he met his wife, whose eyes were red with weeping, and
fatigued with night-watching.
"Well, Sophia, how is the boy? I believe you will kill your-
self, by being up so laie every night. But #vhat do you think
of the story about De Goesse, and the note which I sent to
you #"
"Alas! do hOt talk fo me of that crazy fool. Al] I can s#y
about it is, that I thank God that he bas gone away. You can-
hOt think what a bad nighç we had last night, and how dear the
boy is fo me."
