CHAPTER XXII.
THE TWO VISITS.
AT # short distance from Tunefors, a path branches off from
the main road, which leads from the lake toward the forest.
This l#ath leads to the parsonage, while the other goes straight
on to the mountain. Amelia was afraid of nothing–neither of
mud-puddles, nor of wild animals or robbers. With the light
hcart of u clever country girl, she climbed over the obstacles in
the road, jumped over swampy holes, and upturned stumps, and
after u good hour’s walk she arrived at the little valley, from
which af the top of the bill a little cottage coulfl be seen. Tha#
was "the 5Iountain."
Glad that she had arrived ai the end of ber journey, Amelia
hastcned on, and was soon af the door, at which ber little fingers
knockcd several rimes belote she was admitted; because the loud
continued ralopingsofa hammer drowned the sounds of ber knocks.
Af length the door was ol#ened by an old red-haired fema]e
domestic, who looked surprised af such an unexpected visit, and
stepI)ed backwaxd; but as the door was open, Amelia pussed in,
and walked up to the table where an old man was busy drivhlg
a wedge into a worn-out window-blind, to keee if from i#all#g to
l#ieces.
The old man’s torn aud patched coat, the dirty room, a#d the
miserable furniture, were hot calculated to produce the idea that
the inmates of the cottage were wealthy. On the contrary, the
utmost l#ovcrty seemed to bave taken its residence within the
dilapidated walls. #Vhen Amelia approached Che old man, he
pushed his night-cap a little on one side, and laying down the
hammer, ruade a motion, which was hot without # cer#uia
