satisfy in outward matters. Without really
loving this man, she had devoted herself entirely
to him, shared all his interests, and tried to
attach him to her with the ardent desire of a
woman, who naturally craves for possessing the
undivided devotion of her husband and her
child’s father. When, in spite of all these efforts,
she saw him turn away and place another
between them, the artificial bond of tenderness
burst asunder, her heart shrank back and cast
out the image to which it had clung by an effort
of her will, and she was once more alone.

She now resolved to create a future for herself
and her little daughter, and left home and
country to resume her solitary, studious life
abroad.
