‘You have no idea what a snake she was, and
the life she led your Aunt Marpha and myself!
And poor brother Peter, he had his fill of her
too! When she was angry with one of the
servants, for instance, she would rush into his
room, and ask him to punish the culprit with his
own hand. Of course, he was much too
kind-hearted to do that, and he would try to reason
with her,—no use! she only flew into a rage,
and showered abuse on him. And he—old
woman as he was—would sit and listen in silence.
At last, seeing that she could not rouse his
temper with her words, she would take his papers
and books, in fact, everything she could get hold
of, and fling it into the fire, exclaiming: “I
won’t have that old rubbish in my house!”
Occasionally she would even pull off her slipper
and give him a box on the ear! And he, silly
thing, what did he do? He tried to take her
hands—very careful not to hurt her—and said,
as gently as possible: “What’s the matter with
you, Nadenka? Try to control yourself; are you
not ashamed to behave like this?”

‘But she did’nt mind in the least? ’

‘How could he stand it? why did’nt he try to
get rid of her?’ the children exclaimed, flushing
with indignation.
