in feverish expectation of what Aniuta would
have to tell her. She put no questions, but there
was a hostile feeling in her heart towards her
sister, and when Aniuta came up and tried to
caress her, Tania pushed her away vehemently in
a flash of anger. This offended Aniuta again,
and she left Tania to her own sad humour.

Tania dreaded the moment when Dostojevsky

he never came. They sat down to dinner—no
Dostojevsky.

There was a concert in the evening. ‘Of

and they will be alone!’ Her heart ached with
jealousy. No! Aniuta went to the concert with
them, and was in high spirits all the time.

When the two sisters were going to bed that
night, Tania could not control herself any longer.
Without looking at her sister, she said:

‘When do you expect Fedor Michajlovitsch?’

Aniuta smiled. ‘Well, you don’t want to know
anything, you won’t talk to me, you are offended!’

Her voice was so kind and gentle that Tania
melted immediately, and her love for Aniuta
came back.

She crept up into her sister’s bed, clung to her,
and burst out crying. Aniuta patted her head.
