feated, and most probably my removal from Sweden effected, which
indeed is the object aimed at by the Consistory of Stockholm.

I may at once acquaint Your Excellency that such a restriction
as the one above noticed, will assuredly prevent the erection of
the Chapel, and involve the Conference in a loss of 6000 Bco
paid for ground, as well as between 3 à 4 000 more laid out for
foundation etc. In the hope that something may yet be done to
avert such a calamity etc.

Respected & dear friend,

Bearing a grateful remembrance of the unfeigned kindness with
which you received my beloved sister & myself when I was last in
Götheborg, I have not forgotten my engagement to give you the
earliest information regarding the settlement of the long pending
question. I Praise God who doeth all things well, that I can now
speak with some confidence of a settlement and a favourable
settlement too. Last Friday the matter was again brought forward, and
as I am given to understand a resolution come to, that »the
Wes-leyan Methodists should have permission to build the Chapel and
hold their services in Stockholm, with the understanding that they
will carefully observe the existing laws on religious freedom». By
the latter clause even the Consistory of Stockholm may be pacified,
for this is (ostensibly at least) all that they have been contending
for, but the vexatious illiberal conditions requested by their report
are taken no notice of. The resolution not being »justerad» I
cannot of course speak with absolute certainty, but I believe, blessed
be God! the strife is drawing to a close and the Royal sanction
to our peaceful and I hope useful proceedings not far distant. The
Lord grant me prudence & grace to improve this to His glory and
the good of many.

Strenuous have been the exertions made by the ArchBishop
& C:o to delay a settlement, and marvellous will their surprise,
disappointment and irritation be when they find that Bishop H.
has carried it through.

Wallin finding that H. was not so manageable as the former
H.’ and fearing that it would go against him, has been
extraordinarily active, and latterly shifted his ground & professing great dif-
