HANDLINGAR TILL GEORGE SCOTTS VERKSAMHET I SVERIGE I 6 7
— with joy & praise, as it did at once inform us of your happy
return & shew you were more than ever found worthy of the blessed
lot to bear His »smälek». The same feeling has ever since amongst
us been the effect of the persecution & rebuke we heard of, & your
own official letter, which we have thankfully received, could indeed
add nothing to a conviction allready fixed. Still we read it with
much satisfaction & will make the best use of it, but feel rather
longing for another more confidential writing.
More than once during your absence I felt a strong inclination
of expressing to Mrs. Scott my christian sympathy & at the same
time inform myself of your proceedings in a distant country to the
adwantage of your »second home», but a still suffering state kept
my activity within rather narrow limits: for months an excedingly
weak state of health confined myself to bed, wanting deeply the
comfort of christian love -— yet without to find it but in the breast
of a beloved partner, & a dear little family. The deplorable state of
shism, tho’ for the present calmed as to its outward expression, &
want of »brotherly love» is still spreading its gloomy & melancoly
influence & there is also no more any röck for the world to hurt
itself against: every thing is peace — a peace with a face pale &
cold as death, but God alone is the judge as well as the searcher
of the children of men.
Mr. Keyser by letter & Mr. Bruzewitz personally gave us time
after time satisfacting news, the latter even the hope of seeing you
amongst us, telling you were intended to visit Mr. R. at Kalf, when
a passage through J—g would not have led out of the way. I need
not to say how pleasant such a plan seemed to us, but we soon
felt dissapointed, yet praising the Lord that your own dear family
& congregation at S—m were sooner comforted by your happy &
blessed return. Mr. R. is celebration the holy festival of Christmas
with his brother, & we have also been quite alone during these
days. Mr. W—his health is, praised be God, in a good state &
he has delivered several most beautiful sermons by which he has
shown himself as a zealous combatant against the Antichrist of
the day.
After a too long silence indeed, a letter from the dear Burts
has informed us of there [— their] happy return to England & also
contained the interesting new of Ellens marriage with Mr. Henry
Kingswich[?] which took place on the 24 August. Mr. L. whose
state of health, in consequence of an inflamation on the brain is
rather alarming, has postponed his plans of studying & is for the
present with his sister in Ireland. Mr. and Mrs. B. seems to dwell
alternately at their children.
Before concluding, I have to ask your forgivness for having
not yet returned your books, which still more than a year have
been in my hands!! During your absence I thought you would allow
