MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN
of our Christian faith, by the advocasy of Straussian doctrines, this
was however warmly opposed, and it appears likely, that the papers
in question would suffer loss thereby, when happily for their
destructive plans, an opportunity offered of turning round, and under
pretext of defending the Lutheran Church, they violently attacked you,
as well as all vital and practical Christianity in the Land, well
knowing that vital and practical Christianity, is conservative, and forms
a bulwark against the tide of Revolutionary movement.
I need not say how much I have been disgusted by the
incessant and abominable falsehoods these papers have published against
you, affording full proof that any means are considered by them
fair, which lead to the end they aim at.
I have great pleasure in assuring you of my unaltered regard
and friendship.
Yours ever truly
The Rev.d G. Scott. M" Björnstjerna.
91. Till Sir Thomas Cartivright:
His Excellency Sir Thos. Cartwright,
etc. etc.
I beg to inform your Excellency that in consequence of the
decision of the Governor Count Lewenhaupt regarding the Swedish
Services hitherto conducted by me, it will be necessary for me to
visit London that I may receive such instructions there as the
circumstances demand.
The English services must therefore be suspended for some
weeks, and in consequence of an old Swedish law, that of 1781,
having been revived as applicable to the services conducted in the
English chapel, I seriously doubt if those services whether English
or Swedish can be resumed untill it is ascertained whether I am
bound by the law of 1781 or have freedom agreeably to the
evident intention of the Royal Resolution of 1838. This of course I
shall submit to the proper parties in London.
Meanwhile with grateful acknowledgements for your Ex. kind
attentions
[Geo. Scott.]
