MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN

appeared on the 16th professing to come from New York, but
trustworthy informants have declared that it was fabricated at
Göteborg. These two anonymous letters constitute all the authority for
the allegations presented and got in the outset, the Missionary is
stiled, »the apostle of lies», and on the 22nd it is declared: »Now
justice must take precedence of mercy, now if ever the government
should take up the matter; that government has often acted in an
unpopular manner by denying foreigners the privilege of residing
here, let the same government now at length do a popular act by
sending this man away». The same paper took care three days
after, to guard its readers against supposing that the statements
made in America constituted the principal ground for wishing the
removal of the Missionary, for that removal it was foreseen would
only issue in a new opportunity and reason for calumniating
Sweden, but »the chief reason (say the Editors) why we urge Scott’s
removal is the mischief he has done and is doing here».

On the following day another lengthy attack appeared in which
it is allowed that the statements made in America may have been
quite true, but severe charges are brought against Mr. Scott because
he did not confine his labours to the 30 English who alone had
any claim on his regards; his disinterestedness in labouring among
the Swedes is positively denied, and he is urged to withdraw
himself from the Country, or induce the Conference to remove him,
seeing while he remains he must be the object of unqualified
contempt. On the 3rd Dec. a still more virulent attack was issued, in
which Scott is associated with Laing, a political writer, whose book
on Sweden caused much illfeeling; it is declared that L. received
his statements from Scott, and that both acted under the secret
sanction of the gov[ernmen]t the intention being to degrade Sweden
in the eye of the World, as had been done with Poland, and for
a similar purpose. Scott demanded proof of the allegation, that
he had furnished Laing with his information knowing as he did,
that that information had been derived from the very men who
made the charges ag[ains]t him; and the reply was: »Scott’s denial
of the fact is the best evidence that we are correct». In the same
article it is made out in the Editors’ own way, that »Wesley was a
calculating fanatic, seeking only to erect a spiritual despotism, a
most polished politician who always took care to cleave to the party
having power, and maintained his hold over the deluded people by
declaring that there was no salvation out of Methodism».

On the 24. Jan. 1842 surprise is expressed that only the
Liberal press is found undertaking the cause of the Lutheran Church,
while the Government and especially the Arch-Bishop are silent and
inactive. On the 26. February every lover of freedom is warmly
exhorted to use every means to prevent the spreading of a system
which leads to spiritual slavery and the degradation of humanity.
