HANDLINGAR TILL GEORGE SCOTTS VERKSAMHET I SVERIGE I 6 7
Two days following it is asked, »why this gentleness towards Scott?»
Because (it is answered) what the Russian power is in material
things, such is Methodism in spiritual, an instrument of suppressing
what some call »revolution» but what others call the striving of
humanity towards freedom and improvement. On the 22nd March,
subsequent to the riot, the same paper noticing that the Missionary
has suspended the Swedish service till after Easter, says »it is most
desireable that by an act of the Government the service may be
prohibited for ever, Methodism has already done mischief enough».
The following day it is declared that nothing can be objected
against Scott’s public operations and preachings, these are
acknowledged to be innocent enough; but it [is] his influence in families, his
secret workings which cannot be taken hold of by the law, which
are dangerous, and the only method of curing this evil is to send
from our shores a man who if allowed to continue will do more
mischief than can be calculated». Lest such articles should not
accomplish all that was desired, novells brief and racy were written
and published by this paper, representing the Missionary and his
Christian friends in a light that could not fail to prejudice the
minds of a people of whom in general it may truly be said, they
spend their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some
new thing. On the 6th April the government is again urged by an
arbitrary act to remove Scott, as there was little hope of the
Conference doing so, seeing: »what we consider a reason for removing
him, the Conference will consider a reason for continuing him, yea
canonizing him; Scott has not replied to our many accusations,
therefore they are established». So concludes this paper though
when a refutation with the Missionary’s name was sent, it was
declared »his denial is the strongest proof seeing he is such a
notorious liar», and the articles of friends were refused insertion even
as paid advertisements. On the 11 th it is stated: »Scott denies that
he has made any proselytes, how is this now so decided; we guess
that he has at length received dispensation from the allpowerful
Conference to venture a falsehood on this subject; such
dispensations are not uncommon in these so called religious societies».
A much more powerful organ however is the »Aftonblad»
possessing upwards of 5000 subscribers among a population of less
than three Million, and at this moment confessedly wielding the
political destinies of Sweden. It was the Editor of this paper that
published Strauss’s »Leben Jesu» and that the blasphemies against
our most holy faith almost daily appearing in that paper do not
diminish its circulation is only a painful evidence, that this
professed people of the Lord »love to have it so». The Editor labours
openly to bring about a republican form of Gov[ernmen]t and seeks
to undermine and destroy every thing that stands in the way of
the change he desires to effect. How this paper has treated the
