MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN
subject before us will appear by the following brief extracts. On
the 16th Nov. he points out the Missionary as one guilty of
infamously calumniating the Swedish nation, and belieing the Swedes
that he might thereby deceive the Americans. On the 3rd
December the pamphlet is briefly noticed as exhibiting great courage and
openness, and in a more lengthy review of its contents four days
after it is stated that Mr. Scott would not have dared thus to speak,
if he had not been assured of Government support; that a dark
& deep plan laid to degrade the nation is thus discovered and
must be exposed. Because of the animadversions against the
profanation of the name and day of God so prevalent in Sweden,
which appear in the pamphlet, Scott is called a »shameless
hypocrite» covering his real designs under this appearance of sanctity.
A picture of Sweden equally dark is drawn by the Editor but
resolving all the existing evils into the maladministration of the
authorities, and the sins of the aristocracy, and the following
remarkable words close the description, as containing the application
which Scott ought to have made before American audiences: »Pray
to that God you worship in common with the people across the
ocean, that he would grant them equality with you in Political
liberty, and if they require your active cooperation, by information
or support for its attainment, assure them thereof — such words
would have been »acceptable words», in this way he would have
spoken »words of truth» and if the previous painting had been
strong not a word of falsehood would have been found there.»
It is further asserted in the same article: »lf Scott sought the
good of the people he would not offend the people, but would be
necessitated to offend the authorities — but No! he is satisfied
with government and expects protection, and why? A government
that ceases to act constitutionally, a clergy becoming more & more
hierarchical need such agents as shall make the people so
concerned about spiritual things that they neglect temporal. This might
be all very well, but let our authorities bear in mind that Scott is
himself under a foreign power guiding all his motions. But — the
government leave him unmolested, while harmless Liflanders, Poles,
and visitors from the Country of Wilhelm Tell are denied the
hospitalities of our land. On the 13th January there is an account
of the extravagant preceedings in Småland, in which it is said that
Scott’s portrait is plentifully found there and solemnly worshipped,
some declaring that the original is really a reappearance of the
Redeemer & »these things» (it is added) »in connexion with his
proceedings in the Capital shew that it is high time for our
authorities to vindicate the rights of common sense against all this
growing fanaticism». On the 2nd February, the declaration is:
»once for all we have discovered the Wolf in sheep’s clothing and
he shall not now escape. Scott however is only the wretched tool
