MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN
W. Bunting who was absent. My text was, »Ye know the grace
etc.» and I had good liberty before a full chapel. On Monday
morning I went down to Woolwich to see Lord Bloomfield, and was
most kindly received. I was perfectly surprised to see his Lordship
so hearty and strong. He assured me that he had conversed at
full length with Lord Canning at the Foreign Office, and a
Memorial from the Wesleyan Committee is expected there. Lord B.
promises to do all in his power to aid us in getting what may appear
to be just and right. Returning from Woolwich by 1 o’clock I met
the Committee of reference and for four hours that Committee
engaged in a close examination of the whole subject. My written
statement took more than two hours to read and you may guess
what time it took to prepare, going through all the newspapers and
other documents in my possession. I am thankful to say that no
blame whatever was attached to me either as regards my journey to
America or my proceedings during the last fearful winter and spring.
Indeed Dr. Bunting spoke only in too flattering terms of the
wisdom, patience etc. which had been manifested, acknowledging the
goodness and grace of God in it. The Committee seemed quite at
a loss to decide what was best to be done, and separated to weigh
the matter seriously and meet again. This however appeared
tolerably clear that our labours in Sweden are at an end, and that
whether the government of England take up the question or not, G.
Scott & family will have a station elsewhere. ’Tis true even this
may be changed should an efficient remonstrance from our Foreign
Office bring the Swedish authorities to their proper senses, but at
present it appears most likely that my Swedish text of March 20,
»Arise let us go hence» was prophetic, and equally probable, that
I shall not at least for a long time see Sweden again. The
Committee appear to think, that our work has advanced to the point,
that we must either go forward and make proselytes or retire
altogether. I think you may notice this to a few of the friends, indeed
all you think right. The fact is, the infidel party will not have our
labour, the authorities refuse our labour, of these things I have
evidence. I know that many pious persons are of a different opinion
and desire our continued labours, but of this I have no evidence to
present. Had the pious friends in Stockholm made such a public
declaration as was talked about, the whole matter would have received
a new character. Be assured’ my love, that for your sake, our
chil-drens sake, my own sake, I shall urge your return as soon as I can.
Of course nothing can be said yet, but I should deem it not
impossible but you may get to Conference as well as myself. Possibly
your best mode of conveyance would be Capt. Sutton’s ship the
second voyage, but of this more anon. All Monday night 1 was
still very unwell and on Tuesday morning Dr. Hunter proposed the
removal of my old tooth, and at once set about it. The work was
