HANDLINGAR TILL GEORGE SCOTTS VERKSAMHET I SVERIGE I 6 7
was known to the King before he granted his resolution, and it
really does appear, that although the British Government cannot
force upon the Swedes services which they do not wish to have,
yet that Government can say to the Swedish Authorities: You must
either restore the services for the performance of which the place
was erected, or relieve the Wesleyan Conference of a place no
longer of any value to that Conference, while it cannot be employed
for the purpose for which it was reared.
The application of the law of 1781 by the Attorney General
of the High Court, and the Governor in his Minute of March 30th,
gives a new aspect to the whole case, for if that law is to be
considered now in force under the terms of the Resolution of 1838, as
one of the ordinances to be carefully observed by the Missionary,
then it may clearly be shewn, that neither English nor Swedish
service can be held without constantly exposing the parties to such a
breach of law as would invalidate the grant of 1838.
On all those points, as well as every thing connected with the
present circumstances and future prospects of the Stockholm Mission,
the Missionary respectfully requests as early as practicable the
advice and decisions of the Committee, expressing himself willing to
return to that den of lions, or devote his energies any where
according to the wish of the Committee.

been rather poorly, and on Saturday applied to Dr. Hunter, who
gave me some very powerful medicine. On Sabbath I heard in the
morning a most delightful sermon from Mr. P. C. Turner on Rom.
12: i. Seldom have I heard such powerfully persuasive eloquence,
and I wondered not, that this elegant & excellent preacher should
have been the instrument of awakening and converting I am told
thousands of souls. Olof Petterson knows him well, if I mistake
not. In the afternoon I walked upwards of four miles to Romney
Terrace Westminster, and preached the Missionary Sermon for Mr.
