MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN
worthy have, by the influences above noticed not only placed him
in very trying circumstances, but brought the pious and zealous
Swedes, who in various directions exert themselves for the
promotion of godliness, under most unjust suspicions as if they were
acting as Methodist Agents, it appears to the Committee that they
would not, as a christian body, be justified in urging, by the means
they might bring to bear upon the subject, the continuance of their
operations in Sweden. And although the appeal permitted by the
decision of the Governor has been duly forwarded to His Majesty,
the Committee leave it simply to its own merits, without using any
influence to induce a decision in favour of the re-opening of the
place of worship for Swedish service by an English preacher.
A difficulty however arises, which the Committee have requested
me to submit to you in the hope that you may be able to give
such information as might lead to a christian and honourable
adjustment of the whole matter.
The property, secured to the Wesleyan Conference, has cost in
all RD.Bco 57,428.15.8. — Subscriptions from Christians belonging
to various sections of the Church of Christ in England, Sweden and
the United States have been received for that property to amount
of RD.BC0 25,883.18.6., the remainder having been advanced by
the Committee or borrowed on the property. Now, although the
Conference could legally dispose of the property to the best
advantage, and appropriate the proceeds,’yet that body is morally bound
to carry out as far as possible the pious design of those who
contributed the above named liberal sum. If therefore any arrangement
could be made, by which the property could be secured for religious
uses, and would be employed in promoting evangelical piety, the
Committee would be disposed to give the parties entering into such
arrangement the benefit of the subscriptions, and a property which
with every regard to economy in the purchase of the ground and
erection of the buildings has cost RD.BC0 57,428, a sum including
Insurance paid in full for 10 years, might be had, for christian
purposes, for RD.BC0 31,545. The Insurance valuation is 30,000 Bco
so that no great sum would be required in Cash, as the larger
proportion, might be borrowed on the property.
The Conference has its ordinary Annual Meeting in London
this Month, commencing on the 27th, and it would be very
de-sireable if some tangible proposal could be laid before the Members
of the Conference during their sittings.
Knowing the deep concern you feel for the interests of
Christianity in the world generally, and particularly in your native land,
I feel assured you will not only kindly excuse this liberty, but as
speedily as practicable communicate to the Committee such
information on this important subject, as could be instantly and practically
acted upon.
