dome betwixt vs to communicate of other matters) strange overtures
of the meanes to enlarge religion towards the Greeke Churches, by
the Emperor of Russia, whome he saith God doth moue to favour
Protestants extraordinarily. He knew of all those of the Christian
society which was intended by those that wrote Dexteram amoris,
and told mee the causes why they did not settle, as their purpose
was in a certeine Isle of the Balticke sea, in the confines of the
Russian Territories. I received much content by his discourses;
and take it as a speciall providence of God that I haue met with
him, for he is wholy bent to publique endeavo[urjs & hath promised
to enterteine correspondencie with mee hereafter, to w:ch effect as I
gaue him some memorandums & addresses soe he gaue others to
mee in theis parts, & informed mee of divers things concerning
this State. 1 pray fayle not to write the most materiall things of
State to mee, and that weekly, for I shall haue great vse of the
knowledge of the Changes of publick affaires in this place, & from
hence you may expect in due tyrne the like from mee.
You see what I write to mr1–, you may discreetly second
my desire, and moue him to send mee a comission, to be able to
propose the desire of those that would obteine a place to plant
themselues vnder this Crowne, and yf Mons: De Geere obteyne his
desire, they may be made partakers of the same, and soe obteine
that w:ch I heare was refused to my Lord Forbes, for he having
demannded liberty of religion for a plantacon as the first condicon,
it was refused, & therevppon he went backe & desisted from the
suit; now yf theis others should procure a libertie to themselues, &
perhaps the Scottish plantacon not be once menconed in the treaty
& grannt of such a matter, it might bee a disadvantage to it, or at
least a neglect in it, besides that now it is most seasonable for
them to worke ioyntly with others of the same mind to strengthen one
anothers suit. Therefore although I desire but a Letter of mr1–,
yet yf a more formall Commission should be deferred vnto mee, &:
sent hither to sollicite the matter in the name of those that are
willing to transport themselues hither, I shall not refuze it. And
this yf need bee you may let him know, and yf you thinke good
stirr him vpp to effectuate also. If anie English Transplanters that
looke towardes Germany or theis parts will put in also for this
end, let mee know of it, & let some one or two write in the name
of the rest.
Vrge mr Streso to print the thinges I left with him, I wish I
had already here 100. of each of the things to bee printed. They
might be all ymployed to good vse. As for the moneys which you
may receive for my maintenance you may consult with mr1–how
