2 O 2 MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN

This is ye effect of my iourney w:ch I hope will breed further
consultacons & resolucons here, For if there be a meetinge this winter
of the States of this Kingdome they haue all giuen mee notice y:t
they doe intend to propose the matter to ye rest o t their brethren.
All this I haue this eueninge after supp[er] when wee were risen
from the table related to the Lord Channc: who seemed very well
pleased with my good successe amongst their diuines and professed
a willingnes to further the worke soe farre as hee could; he said it
would be conuenient, that here some Synodicall resolution should
bee taken in it in due tyrne & that also I should dispose the Church
of Denmarke in like manner to concurre & then with the Churches
of great Brittaine the busines might bee publiquely vndertaken. This
is the effect of my negotiation at this tyrne.

Now two things remaine yet to bee done. First I must
an-swere ye B[ishojp of Westerose his difficulties: Secondly I must
make a treaty Theologico-Politicall concerninge the meanes &
manner of p[ro]ceeding to bee vsed by this State in furtheringe the worke.
For I see y:t no State is so fit to goe aboute it as this is for many
respects w:ch tyrne will not p[er]mit me to insist vpon.

As for the publicke newes. It is certaine y:t the Saxon &
Im-periall forces are quite defeated in Pomenn by Bannier & Lesley,
this victory is counted as considerable as any w:ch hitherto they
haue gotten. For it was a generall battaile of all forces on all
sides & ye defeate of ye enemy is totall of all ye Infantry, and of
soe many of ye horse as did not escape by flight. On Sunday next
they will shoote all ye ordnance here about ye towne in signe of
ioy. Thus cases are altered: Now if you haue amind to doe any
thinge you haue the best opportunitie in ye world, & if you ressent
not ye affront done to my Lord of Arundell ag[ains]t all equitie, &
to your self in ye refusall of your demannds what will ye world
say of you hereafter? But it belongeth not to mee to p[er]suade to
warre who am a professed man of peace. The Lord turne all to
his glory & to ye comfort of his distressed Churches.

[John Durie].

To William Laud.1

(Stockholm, J| October 1636.)

Most Reuerend Father in God,

I came the other day backe from a little progresse towards
Vp-sall, Westerose & Stregnese; the three chief Episcopall Seas of this
Kingdome: in all these places I haue gotten more co[n]tent then I
did expect; for they were not unwilling; after I hadde dealt a little
