There is a Danish Ambassador expected here shortly: it is
supposed y:t hee will labour to induce this state to accept of
Conditions of Peace; for hitherto Denmarck hath endevoured much that
way; but there is preparation made for continuance of the warre;
for the new enrollments of the tenth man, are strictly prosecuted:
for it is said y:t when the L:d Chancelour goeth, hee will take
8000 foot & 200 horse along with him. Thus I take my leaue
& rest
Yowr Grace his
Most humble & obedient Seruant in Christ
John Durye.
Stockholm this 25 Febr. 1637.
To [Samuel Hartlib].1
(Stockholm, 28 Febr. 1637.)
Stockholme, 28 [?] Febr. [1637].
I haue giuen Sr George a packet wherein you shall haue
lett[re]s to my L. Prymate & diu[ers] others both in Ireland &
Scotland, if they would write some letters in Com[m]endinge ye Swedish
for fauouringe this worke & speakinge hopefully of the successe of
it & set them fully aworke. Sr George hath gotten 2 discourses
concerninge the Images w:ch are left in some of the Lutheran
Churches by w:ch is shewne y:t for simple hauinge of Images they
ought not to bee esteemed Idolaters except they exercise some act
of worship about them; these 2 discourses you may desire to [-p[er]-use-] {+p[er]-
use+} & if you thinke good you may take coppies of them; if I can
find tyrne I purpose to handle fully ye matters w:ch are touched in
ye latter p[ar]ts of both ye discourses, viz. in ye one y:t it is
lawfull to conuerse with ye Lutherans euen in their meetings & in
ye other y:t it is not expedient nor tendinge to edificacon to
simbo-lize with Idolaters in haueinge Images in Churches; it will bee
needfull in due tyrne to cleare more fully these 2 matters.
I find still all the prelates of this Church well affected to my
proposicons so y:t they haue declared themselues willinge to
Cooperate & to aduannce ye meanes of vnitie: Those of Vpsall thinke
y:t a fundamentall confession of fayth would be the fairest means
of vnitie, vpon this I labour to build now- a further treaty with them
y:t wee may come to determine what are fundamentals & how a
confession may be framed of them. B[ishop] Dauenants dissertacon
doth worke much good & disposeth them y:t are ingenuous to
further ye fundamentall agreem[en]t with earnestnes; you rem[em]ber
before I came to these p[ar]ts I sent you to him w:th d:r Polyanders
