meddelanden och aktstycken
both wayes may doe harme; in these p[ar]ts by this I learne, y:t
in all things it is good to keepe a midst neither to discom[m]end
nor Com[m]end too much, for ye one breedeth hatred & ye other
enuy, & soe wee ought to bee in our Judgem[en]ts & affeccons
con-cerninge matters & occurrences as wee ought to bee in our [-exp[re]s-sions-] {+exp[re]s-
sions+} concerninge p[er]sons.
I pray entreate our freinds beyond ye seas not to blaze too
much my proceedings abroad, & not to speak of my hopes too
largely, nor to speake in my name soe much as in their owne.
The conference of Leipsicke is printed here in high dutch with a
patheticall p re]face put to it.
[John Durie].
To William Laud
(Stockholm, 25 February 1637.)
Most Reuerend Father in God,
Hauing heretofore written of all the circumstances of my
proceedings by Sr. George Fleetwood, I will not here repeat: these are
only to let yowr Grace know y:t I spoke yesterday with the L:d
Chancelour Oxenstierne; hee told me of his resolution to go for
Vbsall within three or foure dayes, intending to take me along with
him, y:t a tryall may be made, how farre the treaties of Peace may
bee aduanced at this occasion, of the inauguration of the Archbishop
of Vbsall, at w:ch there will bee a meeting of some of the chief
clergie. Hee enquired of me whether I hadde not as yet gotten the
writes concerning the High Commission Court which Sr. Thomas
Rowe did promise yowr Grace would send ouer: I told him no:
but y:t I hoped they would come with some safe conveyance. Hee is
desirous of them, & I suppose hee will make good use of our forme
of Gouvernment if hee bee authentically informed of it: it may bee
a meanes to settle their wauering thoughts both in respect of new
Constitutions & in respect of the purpose of agreement in Doctrine
with us: for the resolutions of Vbsall will tend towards a
Fundamentall Confession; & I know y:t they will bee more willing to
treat with England then with any other Church.
The L:d Chancelour told me, y:t hee was resolued with the
first open water to go for Germanye againe & I suppose it will bee
May before hee depart: if therefore this might be hadde before hee
leaue these quarters, it would bee a great furtherance to the worke:
for hee is the only man to deale with the Clergie; & I make no
doubt, but after y:t hee shall haue seene the writes, of w:ch I haue
giuen him hope, that some effectuall motion will follow from hence.
