meddelanden och aktstycken

To William Laud.1
(Stockholm, 6 May 1637.)

Most Reuerend Father in God,

My last was from Westerose, wherin I gaue yowr Grace an
account of my proceedings; since I haue beene at Vbsal; & made
a beginning with the professors, but hauing understood of Mr.
Bar-keley his arrivall to this place, & y:t hee hadde letters from yowr
Grace to me; I thought it my duetie to come hither to meet with
him before I did proceede any further; not knowing w:t yowr Grace
his pleasure might bee; now I perceiue y:t the Copyes of our
Ec-clesiasticall Courts will bee sent; I will referre my self unto them;
& in the meane tyrne prepare y:t w:ch may serue for their better
entertainment; 1 know the L:d Chancelour &: the senior professor of
Vbsal doth long to see them: for this matter will bee in the
meeting to bee held; a Chief point of deliberation; & now at this little
meeting w:ch hath beene at Vbsal the Reformation of the
vniuer-sitie hath beene chiefly intended, for the effecting of which some
grounds haue beene laid, w:ch at the futur meeting in this place
are to bee perfited.

I suppose y:t in this matter of agreement they will bee easilye
brought to treat with our Church before all others, & upon easie
termes; but their resolutions doe fall slow, because they must passe
through many heads, seeing the Archbishop is not yet created,
besides they are naturally slow & irresolut almost in euery thing; &
I haue a great combat to ouercome secret iealousies which are
or-dinaryely incident in this businesse; therefore to bring matters to a
head, & to aduance with more speed, I haue gotten all to referre
the whole consideration of the businesse to those of Vbsall; &
amongst those of Vbsall I hope to bring it to one or two heads,
before I enter upon particulars distinctly; by these I shall God
willing bee able to act upon all the rest: The L:d Chancelour hath
told me since hee came hither; y:t after my departure from Vbsal,
hee spoke with the professors in behalf of my worke; & did
recommend it unto them. I intend to returne thither within a few dayes
God willing; & when matters worth yowr Grace his knowledge fall
out I shall not faile to giue aduertisement as I am bound to doe:
thus commending yowr Grace to the protection of Almighty God I
take my leaue & rest
Yowr Grace his

most humble & duetifull Seruant at Command

John Durye.

Stockholm this 6 May 1637.

1 In the Durie Collection, House of Lords.
