To John Coke.1
(Stockholm, 10 May 1637.)
Right Honorable,
Hauing receiued yowr commandes by the letter w:ch Mr.
Bar-keley sent to me from yow towards Vbsal; I thought it my duétie
to come hither to offer my seruice to him, w:ch I haue done; and
am now reddie to go thither backe againe to proceede in a treatie
concerning my worke Ecclesiasticall wherof the fondations were laid
before I went from thence; I haue still large hopes of Good
suc-cesse in disposing the Divines to the effect of reconciliation, but
because 1 walke in a priuat way; & nothing can bee done without
the state here in publick; I suppose y:t when matters are ripened
for their undertaking, y:t their eye will then bee towards England
before all others; wherunto also I haue disposed the Chief of them,
so farre as my way of negotiating doth giue me leaue: but then
also the circumstances of other publick affaires wherin Mr. Berkeley
is employed will leaue a great sway in the effect of this businesse;
therefore although my abilities bee none, & my experience in this

relye upon their freindship, yow will know fully by Mr. Berkeley;
as for me I can make none other coniecture but y:t they will bee
very gladde to haue yowr freindship; & it will bee necessarye to
them if they continue the warre, neither can I well imagine y:t they
will continue long in the warre if they want it; as for to relye much
upon it without a strict league, on both sides, either yow upon their
freindship or they upon yowrs, both yowr wisdomes will not think
it expedient; now w:t their intention may bee towards a stricter
league is a mysterye of state w:ch passeth my capacitie: yet this
much I can testifie y:t hauing hadde occasion since the receipt of
yowr Honn:rs letter to speake with the ltd Chancelour; I brought
him upon the subiect of a stricter league, to discouer how hee would
relish such a motion; & found, y:t when I gaue but a small
occasion, & only accidentally did make mention of the aduantage w:ch
such a thing might bee unto the common affaires, y:t instantly hee
expressed a great deale of affection unto it, preferring it in his
desire to any other league w:ch could bee made by them; with
much thankfull remembrance of the benefits which in former tyrne
haue accrued from yowr state unto them, by w:ch I could gather
nothing else but a great desire y:t such a thing might bee; yet how
