färre y:t yow may rely upon this, yow will bee able to iudge better
then I can conceiue, by the effects of Mr. Berkeley his treatie.

Now they are sending ouer fiue thousand foot to recrute the
armies in Germanie; I suppose from other partes more will bee sent
but how long they will continue in the warre is uncertain: it is sure
they are treating for peace; & if there bee any appearance of
tolerable conditions the L:d Chancelour will go ouer; but I coniecture
not otherwise; for I haue heard him say y:t if hee go ouer againe
hee is resolued neuer to come into Sweden except hee bring peace
with him. This is all y:t for the present I am able to informe; so

Yowr Hon:rs

Most humble & duetifull Seruant in Christ

John Durye.

Stockholm this 10. May 1637.

To William Laud.1
(Stockholm, 20 June 1637.)

Most Reuerend Father in God,

In my last letter written from hence I told yowr Grace of my
intention, & w:t appearance there was of proceeding with those of

Laurentius Paulinus Gothus is to bee translated from the Bishopricke of
Strengnesse to the Archiepiscopall Sea of Vpsal; & the cause of
this meeting is chiefly to consult about matters ecclesiasticall in the
way of gouvernment & Reformation of the uniuersitie; also
concerning the ordering of inferiour schooles in a more perfect way
throughout the Kingdome. My businesse is also to come in consideration
as the L:d Chancelour did promise unto me. Now w:t they will
resolue to doe, & how farre they will goe along with me; I dare
not presume to coniecture. It will stand much upon the Bishop of
Westerose who formerlye did seeme somew:t backward, but now is
in appearance a little more yeelding. It is hard to ouercome
ieal-ousies w:ch men will not discouer & it is impossible to preuent
iealousies & suspicions in a worke of such a nature as this is,
wherin a man must proceede from generall grounds, to winne by
degrees all parties towards the particulars, wherin there is an
agreement, but is not taken notice off.

I am to entreat them at this meeting to depute some to treat
with me hand to hand of particulars, in a settled way of proceeding,
wherin I will undertake to shew satisfactorye meanes to ratifie the
