westin, brev från john durie

2 5 3

& said y:t hee could not gather from the thinges hitherto
communicated to him any reall purposes of ioyning. But (said hee)
when France would not reiect the treaties with England; & England
did not intend first to breake of, yet not beeing able to agree they
haue sette uppe the articles wherof they haue treated, & referred
all to a further treatie with us, thus they saue their owne credit &
doe nothing, & labour to engage us perpetually & giue no reall
assurance of assistance; & cast as it were all the fault upon us, in
the meane tyrne they gaine one yeare after another; & our burden
this yeare hath beene all their relief: for the Emperour hauing bent
all his forces against us & neglected all his other ennemies France
hath prospered on all sides, & the Löwe Countryes haue gotten
Breda, only because they were resolued to use all the extremitie of
their power only against us: but let them looke to it (said hee)
when wee are gone w[ha]t the Emperour will doe next; wee shall
be able to shift for our defence aswell as our neighbours: England
(said hee) is separate from the rest of the world & standeth by it
self; & enioyeth the benefit of the trade & riches of all other
Countryes; here hee related a Discourse w:ch the King of Denmarck
should haue used towards Salvius a yeare ago to persuade him to
belieue that his Ma:tie of Great Britt: would neuer meddle in
these warres, by reason of the benefit w:ch hee reapeth from the
incommodities of others; y:t hee is alone as an Arbitrator respected
by all, sought for by all; & enioyeth the trade more then all &c.,
all w:ch hee should loose if hee should make himself a partye.
Here hee added y:t hee for his part could not counsell his Ma:tie
neither thought hee y:t it would bee wisely done to engage his state
into the troubles of warre; but yet hee thought y:t the necessitie of
the Cause required some reall Cooperating from thence also, & y:t
they should not bee suffered to sinke under the burden. & speaking
of their Burdens amongst other thinges hee mentioned the frequent
sollicitations of officers of our nation y:t now came upon them for
their rests due unto them; wherof many are recommended by his
Ma:ties letters; w:ch respect w:ch wee owe to his Ma:tie (said hee)
doth make our burden the more heauie because although wee cannot
possiblely giue them such content as wee faine would; yet wee
straine our selues to the extremitie y:t they should not go away
without some content; & this little thing w:ch at this season wee
are able to doe is a thing very heauie to us; & to them no
satisfaction, w:ch doth make some of them Grudge & prouoke unto his
Ma:ties letters as if these were not respectiuely enough regarded,
whiles there is no possibilitie to satisfie the intent therof towards so
many as come with them at these tymes. If said hee they were
out of this engagement & hadde a little respit they would with
great thankes & abundantly striue to giue euery man satisfaction.
