meddelanden och aktstycken

negotiation hath done mee great harme & his letter since deliuered
by mee hath sencibly made the Lord Channcellour more cold, yet
I must not take notice of any such matter, but keepinge the [-pur-pos[e]-] {+pur-
pos[e]+} a foote in a Theologicall freindly way, I labour to make a
faire retraite leauinge a ground to reass[ume] the worke in due tyrne,
to w:ch I knowe assuredly that the Lord Channcellour is really
enclyned, But hee must haue his owne tyrne to dispose the spirits
with mildnes and hee told mee that when I was gone hee would
bee able to speake more fre[ely] then nowe hee can doe when I
am present. Thus you see the state of affaires how difficult it is to
haue to doe with an ignorant multitude, and to ouercome eyther
secret or open Jealousies, although a worke bee neuer soe well
meant, in it selfe neuer soe good, and in the proceedinge neuer
soe faire & square.

I doe not write for this present to our freinds till I knowe
what resolution the Lords Regents will take, I hope before the shipp
that is to goe bee ready to bee able to enforme them, of some
good newes, but if not, I must desire you to satisfie them with
these informations w:ch I send vnto you, for why should I trouble
them with complaints or excuses or accusations & such like matters;
It is against my heart to speake of them, and to giue great hopes
where there is little appearance is but a selfe deceiuinge pleasure.
Neuerthelesse I cannot despaire but in tyrne the wiser sort will
preuayle and carry the busines cleare before them. For although
in the confused multitude the B[isho]pp of Westerose doth keepe a
foote the inueterated preiudices and laboureth to cry downe the
intention by their ignorant applause, to his raylinges and crosse
proceedings, yet I said that the other better partie is not idle but
preuayleth soe much the more with the more vnderstanding sort of
the Clergie & statesmen by howe much hee proceedeth vnreasonably
in his passions & false accusations w:ch in the end will vtterly
ouerthrowe his cause, if the matter may bee brought to a settled
tryall and agitation. And although I doe not agitate in the worke,
I see that others will not let it fall to the ground, if publique
distractions &: troubles of forrayne affaires, doe not too heauily
opp-resse the State. This is all that I can enforme for the present.

[John Durie].

To [Samuel Hart lib].1
(Stockholm, 17 March 1638.)

From the same place & date.

By these enclosed you see, how my busines doth stand, yet I
write onely the worst of it to Sir Thomas and doe not expresse all
