westin, brev från john durie 2 5 3

my hopes, y:t hee may bee able to shewe the kinge his letters and
excuse mee the better for not writinge. For indeed I cannot write
all the particular circumstances neither are they profitable to bee
knowne. But yet that w:ch I write is true on the one side although
on the other side I could write more hopefull matters; But I am
willinge to bee silent thereof till all bee ripened & the concurrence
of outward affaires breed a more seasonable way of agitation in this
worke, if 1 can protract tyrne & entertayne correspondency with
such as are really affected here with the worke, the seeds that are
sowen will in due tyrne bringe forth fruite.

I purpose by ye shipps, God willinge, w:ch are to goe from
hence to send you some of the printed copies that you may
distribute amongst freinds. I haue soe much to write, and meditate to
hammer matters into the dull heads or willfull affections of such as
are to bee dealt with all here, that I cannot thinke vpon more
pleasinge subiects, for my delight would bee in p[er]fectinge the
Analyticall thoughts w:ch I did beginne with Mr. S:t Amands and
in makinge an end of Mr. Docemius question, and in compleatinge
the whole positiue part & meanes of pacification to procure a
fundamentall Confession & to shewe the way of applyinge the same to
matters of doubt. But now I am forced to suspend all these
busynesses to defend my selfe against rayling accusations, and to keepe
the Credit of the worke a foote.

I am glad neuerthelesse that the worke is not without
opposition, For by this meanes all the inward difficultyes and lets which
ly in the spirits of Carnall men are discouered and remedies are
thought vpon by w:ch they maye be taken away, for when all
impediments are knowne & sufficiently debated, and all the
Irregularities of proceedings are taken notice of, then by the light which
discouereth and reproueth all things they may bee taken away in
due tyrne, Soe that I aduance the worke one way or other, what
soeuer befalleth vnto mee whether it bee prosperitie or aduersity,
becaus[e] in the one letts are remoued, w:ch would hinder the Reall
Countenance of the matter in future tymes, & in the other meanes
are established, by w:ch the spirit of peace & righteous enclynations
may bee bred in the myndes of men that are not selfe willed &
voyd of all conscience. Thus I looke in all things to the roote of
future matters and not to the appearance of present thinges; o that
our freinds would consider the matter in this kind in relyinge vpon
god for a blessinge, well let vs not faint nor fayle in our duties.
God will send in due tyrne deliuerance; my contynuall cares &
earnestly pressinge thoughts here make mee vnfit & out of Temp[er]
to those other meditacons w:ch you desire, But I am p[er]swaded
y:t our god will supply all in due tyrne, And when you haue stood
out the tryall w:ch is requisite in those that will serue the Lord in
publique affaires without humayne respects, that you shall find ease
