westin, brev från john durie

whole yeare, soe that I begin remarkeably to haue gray haires &
must euen for healths sake remit the earnestnes of my carefull
thoughts.

In the meane tyrne you furnish mee with [packets] of new matter
& bookes also to bee considered & demannds to bee fullfilled. Pray
with mee that I may bee enabled to satisfie your desires in things
most requisite, and y:t in giuinge you satisfaccon others may receiue
it alsoe; you may see what a hard matter it is to auoyd the
Censures of men addicted to a particular strayne, if you Jumpe not in
euery thinge with them, or if they apprehend a danger to their
particular Tenets, to w:ch they are wedded. I suppose Mr. B. to
bee a good man although somewhat Jealous as most men are that
haue no vniuersall aymes, for they cannot see the drift of the
principles, wxh I lay, nor the method of drawing conclusions from the
same. You wrote once that the .knowne Chaplaynes Judged of mee
that for my p[er]son I was without blame, but that my negotiation
was a dangerous matter, and in end would proue an overthrowe of
their designes; you may see by this, that they can make a
distinction, & smell a ratt in the opposition of Principles, and from thence
make a coniecture of the yssue, but our freinds are not soe wise as
to foresee, the aduantage wxh they can haue by the euent of these
attempts. Therefore except God worke by some extraordinary &
wonderfull way for mee aboue all that I can hope and thinke, I
foresee, that in end whiles those that should really help mee doe
desert & leaue mee without cause, and others that haue cause to
feare the yssue of my designes doe beginne to oppose mee eyther
secretly or openly, that (I say) in end 1 shall bee quite left alone,
& be forced to betake mee to a retyred & priuate estate, of life in
some Corner or other. Thus then bethinke your self where I should
be able to settle, if this should thus fall out, But let vs remit the
Euent of doubtfull matt[er]s vnto god, and in the meane tyrne
discharge faythfullv our dutie for the publique good, let vs contynue
in prayer & puritie of spirit without humane passions & earthly
desires. The grace of god be with you.

[John Durie].

To [Samuel HartlilJ.1
(Stockholm, 12 May 1638.)

Stockholme the 12 of May 1638.

I will not enter now vpon other subiects, for I also am
otherwise distracted in the thoughts of packing vp my bookes and
papers that I may hereafter when I am gone have them sent after me
