meddelanden och aktstycken

to Denmarke, for I hope to he gone shortly, because I have bidden
those of Vpsall farewell and have layd a foundation for future
Correspondencie with them. If I make any stay above 6 or 7 daies
it will be occasioned by the Lord Chancelour, for my purpose is
not to spend more time here, then he shall comannde me vpon
hopes of some declaration or furtherance towards the worke, which
if I finde him not willing or very dubious to give, I will not vrge
them, for in this worke of love and reconcilement all must come
freely and with a full perswasion of heart in a loveing disposition
towards the scope. If matters be done through worldly respects &
as it were by constraint, they will not be effectuall, neyther is God
pleased by them that doe things belonging to his service in such a
way. I long also to be at the sound in Denmarke to finde those
things which you have sent thither vnto me. I pray you helpe me
in your prayers that I may be directed to setle my minde in some
steadfast resolution about the further prosecuting of this worke
vn-blamably. For I doe confesse that I am much troubled & perplexed
in minde about them and know not almost what I should intend
by reason of the difficulties which I see arise on all sides. I
know-that when God doth bring matters to extremity in humane
appearance that then he vseth to be neerest at hand for aid, and helpe.
But yet it -is a hard matter to be in a continuall wavering of
thoughts in respect of outward Circumstances which necessarily must
be observed in the prosecuting of this worke.

I doe send you heere a draught of matters which I offered to
the Lord Chancelour his consideration a few daies agoe, and I hope
his Resolutions or declarations concerning some of these points will
determine my thoughts somewhat, But my Chife trouble and feare
ariseth from the relations which my worke hath to your Quarters
and other greate ones. You see how suspitious good, even the best
men are, what is then to be expected of the worst and such as are
indifferent. It is a sore fight to grapple with Jealousies and evill
surmises, none but God who purifyeth the hearts can overcome them.
The vse therefore which I would have you to make of these
enclosed is, to Confirme those that are vpright and willing to
contribute helpe in theire purpose, that others being drawne on by
theire meanes, I may be supported in time to come and not be
constrained to returne home againe till God shewe vs better hopes
and these obiects here specified be brought to some maturitie. This
is all that for the present I have to say.

[John Durie].
