Stockholme the 16 June 1638.
By this enclosed Copie you see the tenour of my dispatch from
hence, which I have also sent to Sr Tho[masj. I finde the Lord
Chancelour glad that Sr Tho[masj hath bene sent over to treate,
and although all the Lords Regents here are seriously well enclyned
towards the effect of my Negotiation, yet that time must bring it
about to be willingly Condiscended vnto by this Clergie wherevnto
the Lord Chancelour doth promise to labour in disposeing theire
mindes to amiable resolutions for future occasions. I suspect him
to be more slowe & Irresolute in my worke then otherwise he
would be, partly by reason of that Jealousie which Mr B:[s] treatise
hath put into theire thoughts, partly by reason of the expectation
of the event of these treaties, for I see that all will be in suspense
till we see to what effect they will come. I doe condole with you
my distracted case and cheifly y:t I cannot avoyd to goe towards
Hamburg to Sr Tho[mas], for besides your declaration of his will
to have mee comeing, The Lord Chancelour doth in a manner
impose that vpon me partly by his letters, partly by some private
declarations which he confideth vnto me to be imparted vnto S:r
Thomas. Yet I purpose to passe through Denmarke and make an
overture for future Correspondencie, and see the papers which you
have sent thither vnto mee. The Danish Resident tould me that
he would write to the Lord Chancelour and the Lord Rosencrants
and his owne præceptor a very Learned man there. These Letters
he saith will be ready too morrow or the next day.
I write this in greate hast & with distractions of thoughts, and
shall not be soe free in my spirit as I wish to be, till I be gone
from hence. It is a miserable thing to be pestred with outward
worldly relations and intangled into feares of strifes and
Controversies which the Implacable Spirits of this Church labour
continually to stirre vp against me least the writes and treaties which I
have given in amongst them should be taken to heart and duely
