considered. For if this could be done, they see that they would
infallibly gaine such assent, that noe lett would be found in my
worke any more.

Pray for me that I may be strengthened with patience,
meeke-nesse, wisedome and discression to know in all occurrences how to
behave myselfe without blame against all Implacable & vnreasonable
Spirits and Courses of men that are voyd of knowledge and
Conscience, and make of Religion a Cloake and pretext of theire
worldly ends and passions. Commend me to all freinds And yf
the answeres which may be due or requisite vnto the Letters which
you have sent me from any freinds be differred, Let them knowe,
that it is because I am not as yet come to Elsenheure where all
your packetts and those larger letters waite for my arivall which I
hope shall be now within a few daies. Thus I Commend you to
the Grace of God and my selfe to your Love, prayers and Care.

[John Durie].

To William Laud?
(Stockholm, 16 June 1638.)

Most Reuerend Father in God,

I wrote on the 21 of April a full relation of all passages fallen
out in my businesse since the 1. of December (on w:ch I hadde
written before) till that tyrne. Now I haue not much to adde saue
only y:t I haue gotten from the L:ds Regents the dispatch wherof
the coppie is here enclosed. I did receiue it but a few dayes ago
& since the receipt therof I haue beene detained by the L:d
Chan-celour in expectation of a letter w:ch hee would write by me unto
Sr Thomas Rowe who is now arriued at Hamburg: this I am to
gette to day or to morrow; & then without further delay, I purpose
to take my iourney thitherwards through Denmarck.

The armie is gone from hence foure or fiue dayes ago. The
full strenth of all those w:ch passe aswell from hence as from
Finland & Lifla[n]d will bee 10 thousand foot & 2 thous: horse
com-pleat. I perceiue that the L:d Chancelour is gladde y:t Sr Tho.
Rowe is sent to treat, & seemeth to hope well of the issue of the
negotiation, if any reasonable consideration bee taken of these to
assist them in the burden of warre till conditions of uniuersall peace
may bee obtained; from w:ch they are not auerse, if assurance can
bee hadde y:t it can bee, with their safetie & credit.

It seemeth y:t euery thing in matters ecclesiasticall (to which
neuerthelesse I find all the L:ds Regents seriously well enclined)
will bee in suspense till the effect of these treaties appeare. In the
meane tyrne the L:d Chancelour doth promise to dispose the minds
