Kristina, 0200, 041 b2 and 0800; Dutch varieties were Concnrrent, Formosa
and Percello; Northern Irish were Liral Prince, Liral Sussex and Stormont
Cirrus; The North American was Cascade; Latvian commercial flax under
the designations Rota and Riga Kron; The Lithuanian variety Ilguneliai and
the German variety Roland.
In all variety experiments Hercules was the standard sort.
In South Halland Concnrrent was superior to the standard in yield
of seed but inferior in yield of straw. Gerda, Margareta and Formosa in
22, 7 and 9 experiments respectively were superior to the standard in both
straw and seed.
In the south Swedish middle country and on the south Swedish high land
the same three varieties were superior to the standard.
In the plain country of W. Sweden excluding South Halland Concnrrent
was the only equivalent of the standard as regards yield.
On the Östgöta plain, in South Bergslagen and the Mälar-Hjälmar districl
Concurrent was superior to the standard in yield of seed, while Kristina
there gave the highest yield of straw.
The outcome of variety experiments in North Bergslagen and Norrland
pointed the same way.
Up to 1950 in the country as a whole 198 experiments have been
undertaken. On the average in these experiments Concurrent was superior to
the standard in yield per hectare. In the 79 experiments in which Gerda
occurred it proved superior to both Hercules and Concurrent. Formosa
occurred in 35 experiments and was superior to Hercules and Concurrent
but somewhat inferior to Gerda. Margareta and Kristina in 11
experiments were equal to the standard as regards yield of seed but exceeded all
varieties hitherto tested in Sweden in quantity of straw per hectare.
In 1949 there were 5 combined variety and nitrogenous fertilizer
experiments. In these Gerda paid the cost of manuring best with 1020
kilogrammes of straw and 130 kilo of linseed after a saltpetre application of
200 kilo per hectare.
Experiments concerning the quantity of seed indicate 140 kilo per hectare
as the normal amount. Experiments on the method of sowing indicate a
tendency towards increased yield after buried broadcast performed with
a ”goose-foot plough share” compared with sowing with ordinary sowing
machines and ordinary distance between the rows. Combined experiments
on time of sowing and harvest time seem to show that flax should be sown
as early as the state of the ground permits. The harvest should be
com-menced when the leaves have fallen off or withered on about half of the stalk
and the seed capsules have turned slightly brown. Ingathering experiments
showed no decided advantage for any of the methods tested. Pulling
experiments comparing machine and hand pulling showed that machine and hand
pulling can give equally good results.
