Respected & worthy friend

J received about two months past thy letter dated August the 10th
1750. J was exceedingly pleased to receive so kind A letter from one
that so dersevedly bears such A superior Character for Botanical
Lear-ning. but was very much concerned that J could not have had it sooner
then above two year after it was wrote]; & much the same misfortune
happened to those pamflets thee sent to dr Colden1 &c Mr Claton2
which our worthy friend Benjamin Franklin3 shewed me last week
ha-veing just then received them which he intended to send according to
direction by the next Post. — J traveled in 1751 most part of the
Autumn & found several new species of plants & shrubs which J should
have sent to thee if J had known thay would have been acceptable.
Wee have four or five species of Jacobea that you have not in Europe,
one species grows in marshes, another in flat low stif ground, another
on could shady banks by great rivers. Another on loose slaty soil on the
great mountains & most of these species is used by the back inhabitants
for the cure of the same diseases that the antients did tho thay know
nothing of the name of the plant. J hope thee hath received the
Medica Britanica4. J desinghn to send thee some specimens next fall: pray
let me know what sorts of seeds thee wants J am glad those that J
sent thee grows. If J can any ways oblige thee with specimens seeds
or plants or any information my poor Capacity can contribute, none can
do it more Cherefully then thy sincear friend

John Bartram.

Marcli the 20th 1753.

P. S. we are all surprised that we have not one letter from Peter
Kalm whome we are ready to tax with ungratitude. thine as before JB.
