new works much. you think very naturally that my Trophis & the Bu-
cephalon of plumier are the same plants, it is very probable but I have
no certainty of it. it is a very kindly wholesome plant the berry8 are
sweet and pleasant, & the leaves much coveted by horses & most kind
of cattle. As to Insect we have but very few here & not above 4 or
5 kinds of birds. but I do think I shall send you yet from here some
very rare plants. here we have a sulphur & iron mine wh supplyes
with hot waters every where at the source the water is boyling hot &
very black, charged with a light black substance w1’ sticks to the stones
in the strome wh examined is nothing but sulphur & particles of iron,
6 exposed for some time under cover shorts out salts of steel; in other
holes nothing exhales but sulphur in hot steams & the air, every where
about is charged with these & the vitriolic acid here every thing is bare,
but the woods about very green & produce in particular two plants wb
I have not seen before. te shrub seldom rises above 3 feet & the
flo-wer spikes are commonly double.
Calix parvus quadriphyllus coloratus. Corolla Idripetala calice
triplo major. Stam. filamenta 8t0 corolla duplo- longiora, erecta, antheris
rotundis germen oblongum bisulcatum, stili duo breviores, stigmata
ob-tusiuscula simplicia, capsula bilocularis oblonga polisperma. and another
plant that grows perfectly like a small Iris but I eant make the flowers
out. I send you but little of this for fear of spoiling the specimen which
I intend for you next year, viz. the small rootleef & a small sprig of
the flowertop. — There is a small reclining piant also common here
wh I eant make out among your genera, it is of the Angiospermata.
Stam. filamenta 4r quorum duo longiora e macula in fauce labii
inferioris oriuntur, recurvantur in arcum divaricatum, & resurgunt sub labio
superiori, ubi Antherse oblongae adnascuntur. duo vero breviora. Stam.
lateraliter oriuntur e parti superiore tubi, ulterius surgunt & antheras
sub labio superiori jungunt, pericarp. capsula oblongo-acuminata
unilo-cularis, Sema plurima.
