When the multitude streamed out of the sanctuary
there was in store for them a historic and more
significant scene. On the door of the north enfrance to the
Castle Church was nailed a placard containing
ninety-five theses on Indulgences, and these Luther offered to
defend in public debate. The theses were written in
Latin, according to the academic custom of the time,
and when Luther had departed, doctors and students
of the university gathered around. They read with
astonishment his bold evangelical testimony to the only
way in which God pardons sin — through repentant
faith in Jesus Christ and His merit alone. The people
throng about the students who one by one begin to
translate and expound the theses to the ever growing
multitude of listeners. In that moment Olavus Petri
doubtless longed for an opportunity to expound these
new truths to his countrymen at home.

From conscientious motives, not by any desire to set
himself up as a reformer, did Luther compose and
publish his theses. Among them were expressed truths
which bluntly unmasked the fallacies of the traffickers
in pardons, truths which burnt themselves into the
minds and hearts of Olavus Petri and many other
earnest seekers after divine light. The very first thesis read:

“Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ when He said,
‘Repent ye,’ willed that the whole life of believers
should be a repentance.”
