The sixty-second was as follows: “The true treasure
of the Church is the most holy gospel of the glory and
the grace of God.”

And the last two of the ninety-five were these:
“Christians are to be exhorted that they be diligent in
following Christ, their Head, through penalties, deaths,
and hell;

“And thus be confident of entering into heaven rather
through many tribulations, than through the assurance
of peace.”

The Ninety-five Theses of Luther comprised not
only a stern sermon on repentance, but also an
evangelical testimony to the grace of God through Christ
toward poor sinners.

The theses were spread throughout Germany in a
very short time. Within four weeks, copies reached
nearly all parts of Europe. The Elector, who was
peaceably disposed, made known to Luther his fears for
the maintenance of peace. The prior and subprior of
the Augustinian monastery in Wittenberg rushed to
Luther in consternation, saying, “For the Lord’s sake,
do not desecrate our convent! The other orders, the
Dominicans in particular, are already rejoicing over
our shame.” Luther answered them in these words,
“Dear fathers, if this cause be not begun in the Lord’s
name, it will come to nought. If it be of the Lord, let
