of Steinlausitz, when he had read a number of the
theses, exclaimed in delight, “Aha! he has come at last, the
man for whom we have waited so long. He will do it.”

In the city of Frankfort, Tetzel on January 21, 1518,
posted his fifty counter-theses, one of which embodied
his old stock argument, thus: “Whosoever denies that
the soul flies out of purgatory so soon as the penny
jingles in the money-box, that man is a heretic.” He
said further that Luther ought to be burnt at the stake,
and himself arranged a mock auto-da-fé, in which he
solemnly consigned Luther’s theses to the flames.
Tetzel was then made a doctor of theology, and copies of
his fifty theses were circulated broadcast. Many reached
Wittenberg, where the students gathered three hundred
copies and, unbeknown to the faculty, burnt them in the
public square amid great jubilation, but to Luther’s
sorrow, when he learnt of the prank.

Not one of the pope’s creatures dared to engage in
public discussion with Luther on his ninety-five theses.
Archbishop Albrecht of Mainz and the Dominicans,
however, lodged a charge of archheresy against him
with the pope, and Prierias, the Dominican father
confessor of Leo X., justified the blasphemous sentences of
Tetzel and added sundry pronouncements of equal
authority, such as this: “Whosoever does not base his
teaching on the doctrines of the Roman Church and the
Pope in Rome, as the infallible rule of faith from which
