II. LITERARY ACHIEVEMENTS OF
OLAVUS AND LAURENTIUS PETRI
PRIOR to the year 1526 less than ten
publications in the Swedish language had left the press.
The very first, published in 1495, was a
translation of John Gerson’s work "On Temptation of the
Devil;" the second, of the year 1514, was a translation
of a little book by the same author, entitled, "How to
Die unto the Salvation of the Soul."
The reformatory work of Olavus Petri began in a
literary way in 1526, with the anonymous publication
of three smaller works and his translation of the New
Testament. "A Book of Useful Instruction" (Een
nyttwgh wnderwijsiting) was the title of his first
reformatory work, published in February, 1526. It was
based in part upon Luther’s Prayer Book of 1522. The
author closes with a promise that the readers would
soon be given the New Testament in Swedish, adding
an admonition to pray for the enlightenment and bles-
