blessing of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. "A
Book of Beautiful and Useful Instruction" (Een skön
nyttwgh vnderwisningh),
published the following year,
was a short catechism, translated, presumably by Olavus
Petri, from a Hussite original in Low German. This
was later supplanted by a catechism worked out by
Olavus Petri himself. The same year he published the
first Swedish Psalm Book, containing ten psalms, four
being from his own pen. This hymnody, augmented in
the editions of 1530 and 1536, was instrumental in
teaching the Swedish people how to worship God and
propagate the evangelical truth in song.

The most important work by Olavus Petri published
that year was, however, his translation of the New
Testament. "Its appearance was undoubtedly the greatest
single event in the history of Swedish literature." In
his "History of Swedish Literature," Henrik Schück,
Sweden’s great scholar and literary critic, has this to
say: "By his noble and considerate usage of the
language the translator immediately raised our mother
tongue and its orthography out of the disorder and
clumsiness of Swedish orthography and syntax in the
Middle Ages."

Through this translation the Word of God was made
the actual possession of the people of Sweden, who now
were enabled to read for themselves the eternal truths
heretofore obscured by the superstition, the pitiful
