antagonists as well. Heliae sought to prove Luther
responsible for the Peasants’ Revolt in south Germany;
Olavus Petri refutes the charge by presenting Luther’s
truly Biblical doctrine of Christian liberty. He goes on
to show that the domineering spirit of the pope and the
prelates was the underlying cause for civil strife and
bloodshed, pointing out that Luther had reproved the
rulers and princes for the tyranny exercised over the
people.
A few months later there issued from the same office
another book bearing the name Olavus Petri, the title
of which was: "Answers to Twelve Questions on
Certain Points in Which the Evangelical Teaching and the
Doctrine of the Papists Do not Agree" (Swar pad tolf
sporsmal om noghor stycke ther then euangeliske
lar-dom och the papisters lardom jcke dragha offuer eens).
In order to settle the unrest caused by evangelical
preaching, Gustav I. caused to be formulated and
circulated first ten, later twelve questions to be answered.
A copy was sent in due course to Doctor Peder Galle,
to be answered before Christmas Eve, 1526, which he
did, as did also Olavus Petri. When the latter
requested an oral disputation on the same points, Galle
declined, although Olavus Petri went twice to Uppsala
for that purpose. He was, however, given an
opportunity to defend his teachings before the king and his
council. Afterwards the written answers of both men
