tenets. The twelve questions were:
1. Whether one may ignore such teachings of holy
men and such church usages as are not in agreement
with the Word of God.
2. Whether our Lord Jesus Christ gave to priests,
popes, bishops, and others, any power or authority over
men but this, that they shall preach His Word and
interpret His will; also, whether there should be any
other priests than those who so preach.
3. Whether their laws, edicts and statutes, if
broken, are able to retain unto any one his sins.
4. Whether they have the power by means of the
ban to separate anyone from God, as a severed member
of the Church of God, and to give him over to the devil.
5. Whether the present principality of the pope and
his following be for or against Christ.
6. Whether there be any other way of serving God
than to keep his commandments; as by observing
man-made rites not ordained by God.
7. Whether man is saved on his own merit, or
through God’s grace and mercy alone.
8. Whether there be any foundation for monastic
life in Holy Writ.
9. Whether any man now has or ever had the
power to prescribe otherwise in regard to the sacrament
of bread and wine than Christ himself ordained.
