III. THE REFORMATION OF THE
CHURCH IN SWEDEN

THE reformation of the Church in Sweden was
undertaken by Olavus Petri, not only by means
of oral preaching, but in great measure by
writing and publishing, as here shown. But not all
members of the Church could be reached—not even with the
Swedish version of the Bible. This was true especially
in regard to the rank and file of the people, who,
themselves unable to read, were at that time led and
controlled by rebellious monks and prelates. The populace,
therefore, naturally held fast to the traditional church
usages and insisted on the continued maintenance of the
convents and other church institutions. This being the
situation, the aid of King Gustav I. was both needful
and in several respects valuable to the Swedish
reformers. Incited by their Roman Catholic priests and by
their hatred for "the treacherous Sture," the
Dalecar-lians set up the demand "that no new faith or
Luther-ism (lutheri) should be forced upon them, and that
the king ought to "burn or put to death by other means
