This work was the first compendium of evangelical
ordinances, acquiring added significance as a book of
service and a manual in pastoral work. Its first article,
treating of the sermon and of Christian teaching,
contains this pronouncement, most true and ever worthy of
note: "Hence we gather that to preach the gospel is
nothing else but to preach the forgiveness of sin, not in
any other name whatsoever (as has been done under the
popes), but in the name of Jesus Christ alone, who is
dead and risen for us; and further, that we are each
and all to preach repentance."
