respect in which Olavus Petri was held in the sister
country. Agricola wrote:

"Hunger is every man’s guest among the peasantry
as also among the clergy. In the cities neither grain
nor salt is to be had. This wretched poverty you ought
to make known to Master Olavus Petri. Maybe his
fatherly compassion will find some remedy, with the
grace of God, such as preaching from his pulpit on the
vengeance, plague, and punishment of God on this poor
land, whereby he might induce the nobility, the
bourgeoisie, and any other godly people to send us some help
in the form of grain at the first open water." Finland
did receive the aid asked for, undoubtedly through the
petitions and exhortations of Olavus Petri.

The Swedish Reformer sometimes has been compared
to his teacher Martin Luther. The two men were
indeed very much alike, particularly in their firm but
humble trust in the Word of God and its promises.
Yet Olavus Petri was not a mere imitator of Luther.
The cordiality and good humor found in the great
German Reformer is lacking in his Swedish counterpart.
The language of the latter is characterized by greater
terseness and austerity. Olavus Petri was also a
historian, endowed with the critical faculty, and as such
he knew how to make historical applications to current
conditions.

Olavus Petri passed away April 19, 1552, five days
