maa man kjende Havvandets specifiske Y.’egt i dr hojere

stedfindende Temperatur og rent Vand af 4° C. .Teg
benævner denne »Størrelse for Kortheds Skyld Havvandets
Tæthed.

For at reducere Havvandets specifiske Vægt ved
17°.ö C, henfflrt til rent Vand af samme Temperatur,
hvilken betegnes ved 8 og er den, som er fremstillet
i de i forrige Stykke beskrevne Karter og Tversnit. til

6. Density of the Sea-Water.

To compute the pressure at a point in the depth ol’
the sea, we must know the specific gravity of the
sea-water at the higher-lying points in the same vertical line,
referred to the existing temperature and to pure water of
4° C. I call this quantity, for the sake of brevity, Dcnsitf/
of Sea-water.

For reducing the specific gravity of sea-water at
17°.5 C. as referred to pure water of the same temperature,
denoted by S Jl^, and which is that represented in the
maps and sections described in the former chapter, to its

density at temperature which I call 8 j.,, T have had
recourse to the following mode of procedure.

If we term the specific gravity 8. the volume of
pure water Tr, of sea-water v. and if the numerators of the
subjoined fractions indicate the existing temperature, the
denominators the temperature of the pure water to which
the specific gravity is referred, we have
