origin, the Lapps. They, too, came to Norway in
prehistoric times. Originally the Lapps all led a
nomadic life, but now a considerable number of
them live in settlements. In historic times, as
recently as the early eighteenth century, Finns
immigrated from Finland into North Norway and
a few also into the southern provinces. These are
called Kvæner, and represent close upon one half
of the Lapp population in Norway.
The population of Norway at the Census of 1930
was 2,814,194, of which 2,013,680 lived in rural
districts and 800,514 in the towns. There were
1051 females to 1000 males.
Counting persons above fifteen years of age, the
occupations of the people of Norway were as
follows:
Agriculture, horticulture, and forestry: 295,906
men and 40,458 women.
Fishing and Hunting: 75,786 men and 191 women.
Manufactures, Mining, Handicrafts: 249,240 men
and 60,573 women.
Commerce: 83,486 men and 62,353 women.
Shipping: 46,129 men and 464 women.
Land Transport: 55,769 men and 6,060 women.
Professional: 39,496 men and 26,751 women.
Housewives: 441,872 women.
Domestic Work at home: 166,264 women.
Domestic Service: 749 men and 119,585 women.
