THE CONSTITUTION
The Constitution of the Kingdom of Norway
was promulgated on May 17, 1814 by the National
Assembly at Eidsvold (Eidsvold in the province
of Akershus. The Eidsvold Building is preserved
as a national museum).
According to the Constitution Norway is a
«Free, independent, indivisible, inalienable King-
dom»; its form of government is a «limited and
hereditary monarchy». The Evangelical-Lutheran
religion is the public religion of the State.
The Executive Power is vested in the King (the
Government), the Legislative Power is vested in
the Storting, and the Judicial Power in the Judi-
cature.
Executive Power: The King exercises his power
in the Statsraad (State Council). The State Council
(the Government) is composed of a Prime Minis-
ter and not less than seven other Councillors of
State (at present eight), all above thirty years
of age. The business to be dealt with in State
Council is prepared by the various executive
Ministries (at present nine), each with a State
Councillor at its head (The Ministries are: Foreign
