PAINTING AND SCULPTURE The major part of Norwegian art (painting and sculpture) is contained in the Nasjonalgalleriet, Oslo, opened in 1842, the director of which is the well-known art historian, Jens Thiis (1870-). Bergen possesses very good _ collections of paintings in the Municipal Art Gallery, in the Kunstforeningen (Arts Society) and in Rasmus Meyer’s Collections. Trondheim too, now has a small art gallery of high quality. The Statens Kunstakademi (State Academy of Art) for painters and sculptors was founded in 1909. The academy has three professors, of whom one is the director. The present professors are: Halfdan Str@m, painter (director), Axel Revold (painter), and Vilh. Rasmussen (sculptor). In 1888 the Government resolved to recognise a committee elected by painters and sculptors and consisting of seven members, of whom not less than four painters and two sculptors, as an admin- istrative committee for State exhibitions of art 64
