Painting.
The earliest painter of prominence in Norway
waa J.C. C. Dahl (1788-1847). His productions of
Norwegian landscapes still rank among the most
beautiful in Norwegian painting. He died as a
professor at the Dresden Academy of Art. The
artists who followed most closely in J. C. C. Dahl’s
footsteps are: Thomas Fearnley (1802-1842), Adolf
Tidemand (1814-1879), and Hans Gude (1825-
1903), They studied at Diisseldorf, and the «Diis-
seldorf school» came to influence that generation
of Norwegian painters. Tidemand is famous for
his paintings of Norwegian peasant homes, which
he depicted with great affection and romantic
feeling. Ejlif Petersen (1852-1929) and Hans
Heyerdahl (1857-1913) settled in their youth at
Munich in company with other Norwegian paint-
ers, and soon rose to fame. Harriet Backer (1845-
1931) was the greatest woman painter Norway
has had. Her interiors, in particular, are unex-
celled. Kitty Kielland (1843-1914) was her talented
contemporary. Erik Werenskiold (1855-) and Ger-
hard Munthe (1849-1928) took part in creating
the painting movement in Norway in the ’eighties,
a movement which had extremely significant
results.
