Norwegian folk music; but, in addition to being
so conspicuously Norwegian, his genius was so
universal that he very quickly rose to international
eminence. Johan Svendsen (1840—1911) was a master
of symphonies and rhapsodies. Ludwig Mathias
Lindemann (1812—1887) collected and published
more than one thousand Norwegian folk melodies.
His work has been continued by Catharinus Elling,
Johan Halvorsen, O. M.Sandvik, and others. Chris-
tian Sinding (1856— ) has produced symphonies,
compositions for the piano, and chamber music.
Of other eminent musicians we may mention
Hjalmar Borgstrom (1864—1925), Johannes Haarklou
(18471925), Gerhard Schjelderup (1859—1933), and
Eyvind Alnezs (1878—1931). Gerhard Schjelderup
and O. M. Sandvik have published a comprehensive
work in two volumes on the history of Norwegian
music: Norsk Musikhistorie.
Outstanding names among the younger gener-
ation of living composers are: Johan Backer-Lunde,
Halvdan Cleve, Arne Eggen, Torolf Voss, Bjarne
Brustad, Eivind Groven, Fartein Valen, Odd Griner-
Hegge, Leif Halvorsen, W. Huus-Hansen, Sverre
Jordan, David Monrad-Johansen, J. L. Mowinckel
Junr., Per Reidarson, M. M. Ulfrstad, Harald Szeverud,
Irgens Jensen and Arild Sandvold.
There is as yet no permanent opera in Norway,
but operas have been produced at the National-
theatret of Oslo and by a number of smaller
theatres in various towns.
The premier musical society is the Filharmonisk
